Your Tank’s “Clean-Up Crew”
No tank is complete without a “clean-up crew!” Every tank is different as far as the number of invertebrates needed to maintain a healthy eco-system, but you always want to have at least a handful of hermit crabs and snails to help control algae. Red leg hermits are great scavengers of uneaten food and algae, but we also offer some of the more fancy varieties, such as scarlet hermits, Halloween hermits, and electric blue knuckle and orange knuckle hermits. Our favorite snails are trochus, which are fantastic algae eaters, and don’t tend to fall over like the turbos. We also carry nerites, ceriths, and sand-sifting nassarius and conchs. Sea cucumbers are also a great addition to your clean-up crew, as they will eat around 200 pounds of organic matter in a year. If you’ve got stubborn algae, you might consider some emerald crabs or even a sea urchin.
More Tank Companions
We also stock various species of Tridacnid clams, such as maximas and derasas. Looking for cool invertebrates for a nano tank? Consider a sexy shrimp or squat lobster. And If you’ve never heard of a squat lobster, we will be happy to introduce you!
